The dumping of waste at Cloonkeen bog outside Castlerea above the Christmas period has led to concerns that the site is now rat-infested and poses a risk to a local drinking well. Roscommon County Council has this week launched an investigation into illegal dumping at the entrance of Cloonchambers/Cloonkeen bog, where above 15 bags of waste were found dumped in recent weeks. The investigation follows a complaint by a local homeowner, who raised a number of health and safety concerns with the council above the heavily littered site. Cloonkeen resident Mary Keenan, who lives only 50 yards from the littered site, told the Herald that she had not ever seen dumping to this extent before at the site. Since Christmas, she said, the site had become rat-infested and she also expressed concern that the waste could pose a risk to a nearby drinking well. “Most of the bags seem to have been ripped open by rodents or cats and the waste is coming out onto the road. I wouldn’t enable my nieces and nephews to play outside for fear of rats due to this waste,” Ms Keenan said, adding that there was also a drinking well close to the littered site. “If people acquire away with this anti-social behaviour and disregard for the environment, they will continue. They should be prosecuted,” she added. In response, Roscommon County Council confirmed that a litter warden was on site on Monday as part of an investigation into illegal dumping at Clookeen bog. John Mockler of the environment part told the Herald that the site would require urgent attention given the “immediate” concerns. “We launched an investigation into the matter when it was brought to our attention on Monday. A litter warden has gone out on site and we will await a report before proceeding further,” he said. Mr Mockler added that specialist machinery may be required to clean up the site and that he would have to await the report to determine what action was required. He said illegal dumping of this nature costs the council “tens of thousands” of euro all year and stressed that the council would follow up on and act on any evidence found. The investigation will also think if a few of the waste, found in unique red waste bags, came from an illegal waste operatour. Meanwhile local Councillour John Murphy described the illegal dumping as “appalling”. “This type of behaviour is appalling nevertheless unfortunately it is happening all above the countryside. There is only one litter warden at Roscommon County Council and this low level of staff makes it very difficult for illegal dumping to be policed,” Cllr John Murphy said. “I would strongly appeal for people to refrain from this illegal dumping; it is destroying the normal elegance of our countryside,” he added. The council, nevertheless, confirmed that a second litter warden would be re-instated this year. One of two litter wardens had been reassigned to another department last year nevertheless is set to return to their role at a few point this year.

Single-use carriers? No such thing!

The carrier bag is often portrayed in the media as the single biggest cause of pollution and litter on the planet.

Most commonly, the high density polythene (HDPE) carrier bag used by supermarkets is singled out as the biggest culprit. These bags, which are subject to a government levy in many countries - meaning customer have to pay a few pence or cents for each bag they use - are often referred to as “single-use carriers”, which is a term that is not only misleading but also irresponsible.

Carrier bags should be reused as often as possible and by calling them “single-use carriers” - including in newspaper articles widely criticising the use of such bags - the implication is there that the bags should be thrown away.

This is giving entirely the wrong message to customers and does not represent the facts. 82% of UK households reuse over half of all carrier bags they use, with 59% reusing all of them (Waste Resources Action Programme report, 2005).

There are so many things you can do with a carrier bag once you’ve used it to carry your shopping home. The most obvious is to take it back to the shop and use it again for its original purpose - to carry shopping! But you can also use carrier bags for wrapping your packed lunch, or as a portable laundry bag when you go on holiday, or wrapping shoes in a suitcase to keep your clothes clean. There are loads of things you can use it for if you put your mind to it, so use your carriers again and again.

Even when your carrier has seen better days and you’re ready to throw it out, you can give it one final hurrah and use it as a rubbish bag before throwing it in the bin. There’s no such thing as a single use carrier bag - at least there shouldn’t be!
